"Tamron AF 18-200mm lens from Amazon" 2010-01-30
By William A. Miller (Citrus Heights, CA USA)
I received my Pentax K10D for Christmas in 2007. It came with the Pentax 18-55mm lens. I like telephoto capabilites, so, I purchased a Tamron 70-300. Both lenses work well for their basic function. On a recent vacation, I was attempting to photograph a stage play from the audience position. The 55mm was too short and the 70 was too close to frame the pictures I wanted. When the 18-200 was announced, I put it on my Christmas list in 2009.

My first experience with the 18-200 was at an event in the multi-purpose room at my grandsons elementary school. I took many pictures of the event without flash. The only disadvantage I can name is that you must accept longer exposure times due to the lens speed for indoor lighting. Outdoors, I have had no issue with the lens speed taking pictures of the grandkids playing at the park.

 "Great Lens" 2007-11-16
By Skibum (Montana)
This is a great lens and I am extremely pleased with the results I am getting. Sharpness and clarity are on par with the more expenses lenses made for the high end cameras(I compared mine with a Nikon D80 18-200mm).

I bought it because it is such a hassel to carry a lot of lenses. Changing lens carries the risk of getting dirt and lint inside the camera body. If tiny particles get on the mirror, they will show up in the pic and have to be removed with a computer. Even though I have a Pentax K10D, I simply did not want to take that risk. The lens hood is a bit cumbersome to put on, bit I solved that with a rubber collapsable hood. I don't think that problem should take away a star.

Another great feature about this lens, when using manual focus, it flashes little red "dots" when you go past the correct focus point. After discovering that feature, most of my shooting is done manually, except for fast action stuff and moving objects. Macro and scenery are all manual now.Pentax K10D 10.2MP Digital SLR Camera with Shake Reduction and 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 Lens

By P. Neis (Curitiba, PR, Brazil)
I'm happy with it. Worth the price. It's compact and lightweight. Can do portraits at 18mm and zoom over birds and distant subjects. It is also reasonably good for macro photos - tried it in some butterflies and small insects.

Problems: Needs a lot of light. Cannot control aperture manually in the lens (most people may not care about that).

I have two Sony Alpha 300 DSLRs and this lens is always on one of them. This lens has given very satisfactory results - perhaps not as good as some of my Minolta prime lenses, but good. I wish that it was a bit faster, f/2.8, but I'm sure that would put the price out of reach.

I have an Konica Minolta Maxxum 5D that is no longer made. I found I couldn't use my old "film based lenses" on this digital camera. But this Tamron lens has worked extremely well on my digital camera. I highly recommend this lens. Plus you don't need to carry any other lenses when you travel. Always a good thing.

Good all around lens. Lightweight and durable quality back by Tamron's 6 year warranty. Chromatic abberation and pin cushion effect is evident at mid to full zoom but should not bother the casual user or amateur photorapher. You may not even notice the aberration unless you are a pro. Good low light auto-focus in tandem with the flash's or camera's built-in focus assist beam. The focus motor is quite noisy but I do love hearing the whirring sound as it locks in on the subject. For the price, I would recommend.

BTW, Sony sells the same focal lenght lens for $500. Sony is a major stockholder of Tamron (See info at Tamron's website). So one can only assume that Sony and Tamron does share the same technology on their lenses except for the price which is $200 less.

 "Great all-around lens" 2008-12-15
By Christopher P. Rodriguez
I'm only a student of photography, so I'm not able to get too technical in my review. I bought this lens because like most, I wanted an all-in-one lens. A lens that would allow me to take close family shots and those distance shots; when I can't be as close as I'd like to be. I've only had this lens for a about a month now, but I must say I'm extremely happy with the lens. With that said, I'm very big on landscape photos and not heavy into sports or fast action shots. The photos I've taken with this lens so far (around 500) are very crisp and clean shots.

I did notice that the lens can be a little slow on the auto focus, so beware. If you plan to only use this lens for sports and/or action shots, you might be a little disappointed. Otherwise, this lens is great! Now, I can get rid of my three other lenses that this single lens has replaced.

Well I finally made the jump and purchased this lens. It has met my expectations though I can see how I probably would not prefer this lens for high speed sports shooting! However I feel it will serve my purpose for photo shoots, family photos and possibly wedding photos. All in all I am very satisfied with the optics, build and weight of this lens. I currently own the Tokina ATX 80-200 f2.8 lens which is really heavy, the Tamron lens is a lot lighter.

Needless to say after hearing the thud, I thought the lens was going to be shot.

"Tamron 18-200, One of Several Very Good, All Purpose, Walkabout Lenses" 2010-01-07
By Tiffany Ann (Black Diamond Bay)
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and so, I think, is one's opinion of a camera lens. I've learned over the years that lens reviews are helpful, but they are just opinions. Yes, for sure, you generally get better optics with more expensive lenses, but it's certainly not a guarantee. And for reasons one can only wonder about, oftentimes two copies of the same lens will produce very different results. For example, my friend Sara, who is as nuts about buying (we're like compulsive buyers) and using Canon lenses as I am about buying and using Nikon ones, has a Canon EF-S 18-55 kit lens that produces images so tack sharp through its whole range that would make you cry.

And so it goes with super zooms, these wonderful lenses that go from pretty wide to very long. If you look at the reviews of any of them, some people claim horrible results, while others scratch their heads, because they're just loving them to death.

My first superzoom was a Sigma 18-200 which I got about five years ago and I was blown away with what I could do with just one lens. Plus my shots were pretty darn sharp. The lens was more expensive then, than it is now. It's still a good lens, it weighs a couple ounces less than a pound and if I only could have been satisfied, I'd have saved a bundle of money. Ah well. Anyway, I had an opportunity to try out the Tamron 18-200 as well back then, but I decided on the Sigma. It was a coin toss. At the time I thought both lenses would be good general, all purpose, walkabout lenses. They wouldn't be as sharp or fast as primes and wouldn't be as light as shorter zooms, but heck, one lens which went all the way from 18 to 200mm (okay 27 to 350mm in the real world), such a deal.

Both lenses were five star lenses as far as I was concerned, both still are, because they are what they are, a very good compromise. If you're expecting a lens that will reach out across a dark night and grab a shot of lovers making out by the beach, then you don't want these lenses, but if you're looking for a good general walkabout lens, both will suit you and they won't break your bank.

But they don't have image stabilization and when Sigma came out with it, I had to have it. So I shelved the Sigma zoom I had, (thankfully I didn't sell it) and bought the Sigma 18-200 OS and Sigma's Optical Stabilizer worked great. I got sharper handheld shots in lower light, but they came at a price, almost half a pound. It doesn't sound like much, eight ounces (7.6 to be exact), but try carrying it around on your shoulder all day long. I really noticed the difference, especially when I was shooting.

I probably wouldn't have gone to that auction site with my fairly new lens, if it hadn't been for Tamron. They came out with their Tamron 18-250 and I had to have it. A bigger reach, the heck with image stabilization. Not only could I go all the way from 27 to 375mm in the real world, but I got back a bit over six ounces, the lens was lighter. So now I had two super zooms, which was good, because I go out people shooting with my sister a lot.

So one would think I'd be satisfied, but when the Nikon 18-200 came out, well Nikon optics in a superzoom. I had to have it, so the Tamron went up for auction (because I just loved the Sigma, even though it didn't reach as far). The Nikon lens focused faster, but not that much faster then the other two, had image stabilization and was faster at the long end and it took great shots, but it weighed more than the other lenses, coming in at a whopping 20 ounces and it was creepy, creepy, creepy and with no zoom lock. The other lenses had almost no zoom creep and they had a zoom lock, which I never used. Very annoying the zoom creep was, still, great shots from a great lens.

Satisfied, well for awhile, then came 2008 and the Tamron 18-270 with their VC version of image stabilization and up for auction went my expensive Nikkor lens. Yeah, I still hung on the my first super zoom, the Sigma. For sure the Nikkor was a five star lens, but a girl can't justify more than two super zooms at any one time.

The Tamron lens actually weighed a fraction less than the Nikkor it replaced. It was a bit slower on the long end, was a bit stiff in the zooming, but easy to get used to and almost no, sometimes no, zoom creep and it has a lock. It's just simply one heck of a lens. Sometimes it's a bit slow to autofocus in lowlight, but still I think it finds its focus faster than I would, but not as fast as the Nikkor.

I should add here that Nikon has upgraded their 18-200 adding a zoom lock. I've played with one and not only have they added that zoom lock, but it doesn't seem to creep nearly as much, but that could just be the copy I used. I should also mention that Sigma has come out with their Sigma 18-250 OS which I was lucky enough to use for a month. That is just one super fine lens. It focuses fast and I think it finds its focus better in low light than the Tamron 18-270. Also this new Sigma has a super quiet motor, though I've never really been bothered by the sound of a focusing lens.

By reading other reviews of these lenses, I've learned that they are all subject to zoom creep, so I suppose in the main, I've been lucky. All of these lenses are very good, at least all of the copies I've used. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend any of them. However, if you go with Nikon, you're going to be paying an awful lot more. You get a slightly faster lens on the long end and you get Nikon quality, but Sigma and Tamron give quality as well and Tamron warranties their lenses for six years, so they're pretty confident that they're building a great product (and now they're part of Sony).

So through my whole super zoom experience, which one do I wind up using the most? You guessed it, that Sigma I bought five years ago. Like the proverbial Timax, "It takes a lickin' and keeps on tickin'." If the day is bright and I'm going people shooting it's the one I put on my camera, because it's light and it's images are true.

This is a wonderful product. I purchased it for my Nikon D-60 camera. The one that Nikon has is three times as much. I used it in the store and was going to get it. I glad I waited and checked on-line for something of equal value and quality without the price. This is a great lens. Well worth a look.

 "Don't Do It!!" 2009-11-09
By Sheree L. Vogt (Newton, NJ United States)
I'm soooo sorry I opted for this lens instead of the Nikon Brand. I should have just kept saving for the real deal. This is one of the WORST lenes I've ever owned and I have been a photographer for over 30 years. I got it in August and didn't take many shots until I went on vacation at the end of September. Now I have 167 files that over a third of the image is blurry. Since I waited past my 30 days, Amazon wouldn't help me. I sent the lens back to Tamron for warranty repair. I got it back and it is better, but still not really sharp. How disappointing! I've always hoped for a lens that would cover all the bases, but I guess having it be sharp is TOO MUCH to ask!!! My recommendation, is RUN the other way from this lens.

I've used Tamron a LOT over the years and never had a problem....this is a true lemon.

For the money, this lens does all that is expected. Of course there are better lenses, but they cost much much more. But remember, it's the photographer more than it is the lens... You can go the same distance in a Honda that you can in a RR or Bentley. This lens is like a very nice Honda, and it takes you where you need to go!

Great lens for full time use. IQ isn't 'L' quality but who can afford lenses like that? The Vibration Control enables me, at 75, to take photos at long end of lens, something I couldn't do on the 18-200 lens I had before this one. Service and delivery were great also.

 "Tamron Lense" 2010-01-07
By HeHa
I am a novice photographer. Alot I do not know. I ordered this Tamron lense thru Amazon. When it arrived (timely), it caused my camera (Canon Rebel Xti)to shut down. Would not work. I contacted Tamron and explained the "error msg" I was getting from the camera and after brief conversation w/tech person at Tamron it was determined that the lens was flawed and for me to contact Amazon and explain this and get a replacement lens. Uh-Oh, right? Let me tell you that a call to Amazon was all it took. A new lens was shipped that day express mail (free of charge) with an authorization label to send the faulty lens back in the same box with charges reversed to them. The new Tamron lens arrived and is working beautifully on my camera. Bottom line? This is a fine lens and Amazon (in my opinion) is one great and reliable company that I will use without hesitation.

This is a zoom lens from Tamron that lets you bring your far away subjects up close while compressing the distance between the main subject and the background for professional-looking results. Even while covering up to a 500mm that enables you to take ultra telephoto shots of subjects further than the eye can see, its design is extremely lightweight and compact. When mounted on an APS-C size digital SLR camera, it provides a focal length equivalent to a 760mm for super ultra telephoto imaging.ing.

 "really a 200-400mm f8 lens" 2009-03-20
By D. Inskeep
I gave this lens a try as a cheaper alternative to the Canon 100-400 L IS lens. After one outing, I returned the Tamron immediately and bought the Canon 100-400mm L IS lens.

This lens is pretty soft at anything above 400mm, and anything below f/8. If you do any kind of print work or like to do heavy cropping the softness of this lens will really bother you - there's no way you can use a 1:1 crop. If you mostly reduce your photos quite a bit for the web, this might not bother you. However, this does affect your ability to shoot in low light though, since f/5 to f/8 is almost unusable due to the softness.

CA is present at longer focal lengths as well, along with pretty poor contrast.

The lack of IS in such a long lens is also problematic - forget hand-held shots.

The one nice feature is the rotating front filter ring - you can buy a cheaper polarizing filter, which is a bonus on such a large filter.

Overall, this lens was a huge disappointment. If you want to take a chance on an off-brand lens, at least go with the Sigma 150-500 with OS. I haven't had a chance to try that lens, but at least it has OS, and the optical quality can't possibly be any worse.

"This is a Great Super Zoom Lens" 2009-02-15
By toedtoes
First, let's say up front that this is a BIG lens. All of the super zooms are. They all do much better with a tripod because of their weight.

Having said that, I have been able to handhold this lens in daytime and get great shots at 400-500mm. Of course, this requires a learning curve. I have found that most telephoto lenses get negative reviews, not because they are inferior lenses, but because folks don't know how to shoot with them. Your best shots will be if you can fill up a good 1/2 to 2/3 of the image with your subject. Less than that, and the camera is less likely to: 1) get true focus on the actual subject (rather than the area around the subject); and 2) get the details needed to enlarge the image without losing quality.

Back to the lens, for those who want greater reach, this lens is a wonderful option. It's biggest competition is the Sigma 50-500mm. While the "Bigma" is considered a great lens, how practical is the 50-200mm range? If you're going to shoot at that range, there are MANY other lenses that are much better in quality and much easier to carry around. At the 200-500mm range, the Tamron's reviews tend to be better than the Bigma.

If you really want one lens that will cover the most ranges, then the Bigma may be your best bet. However, it's not a walk-around lens, so you end up buying other lenses within the same range simply because you can't carry the Bigma all day every day. To me, the better option is to buy the Tamron 200-500mm for when you REALLY need the reach, and buy something else for the 50-200mm range (the Tamron 28-75mm f2.8 and Tamron 70-200mm f2.8 would be a nice combo) for everyday use.

(No mention of L lenses, because if you could afford the L lens, you wouldn't bother looking at the Tamron. :) )

"Light weight, good price, sharp at F/7.1, slow autofocus, slow max aperture" 2008-06-16
By Grant Brummett (Arizona USA)
See Nov 2008 Updates below for comparison between this lens and my new Canon EF 100-400mm f4.5-5.6 L IS

Pros:

Relatively light

Great bang for the buck

Pretty sharp at F/7.1 @ 500mm

Small size when zoomed to 200mm

Nice tripod mount that allows you to rotate the camera and lens

Cons:

Slow autofocus

No Image Stabilization

Cheap plastic build and feel

Slow max aperture especially at 500mm

Works best at long zoom settings on a tripod

Not as sharp as my Canon EF 100-400mm f4.5-5.6 L IS Zoom lens

I wanted more reach to photograph birds and the moon using my Canon 40D so I borrowed this lens for a few weeks from a friend while he borrows my Canon 70-200 F/2.8 L.

The first things you notice are it's pretty light and long especially when extended to 500mm with an even longer hood attached out past that. The hood seemed a little flimsy but attached firmly and stayed in place throughout shooting so I have no complaints about it.

My first shots were of the moon at 500mm hand held on manual mode at ISO 400 1/800th second at F/7.1. I was very pleased with how sharp and what great contrast this lens produced when I got back inside and downloaded to my Mac.

When attached to my monopod or tripod I liked the built in lens tripod mount as it easily allows you to rotate the camera and lens together easily without having to change settings on your tripod. I used this lens mainly on a monopod while shooting birds and this worked really well. I mainly used the lens at 500mm where it seemed really sharp at F/7.1 but pretty sharp wide open as well. Will try some more shots at shorter ranges and post later.

Conclusion:

If you are in the market for a 500mm lens especially one that's a zoom and in this price range and you don't need the speed of a faster lens then this may be the lens for you. I recently purchased a new Canon EF 100-400mm f4.5-5.6 L IS Zoom lens and find it much more useful especially since I am not tied to a tripod because of the freedom of the Image Stablizier. If you can afford it get the Canon 100-400 if you are on a budget and you don't mind using a tripod and having images that are softer then get the Tamron.

6-29-2008 Update

Despite being a really sharp lens, and a versatile one, there area several other things that make a lens a pleasure to use.

1. Fast auto-focus, this lens doesn't have it. After awhile of trading my Canon L lens back and forth with this one there's just too much I miss especially birds in flight. With a Canon L it's a snap.

2. Fast aperture, F/4 maybe I could put up with but when you get above F/5.6 you are getting into really slow territory.

I thought about getting a Canon 400mm F/5.6 L but this may be just a little too slow. I think I will continue to save up for the Canon 300 F/2.8 L. I know it's in another league from this lens, but I just can't give up the even better quality, fast aperture and lightening fast auto-focus. I'll buy a 2x multiplier to get out there further.

11-5-2008 Update:

I just bought a new Canon EF 100-400mm f4.5-5.6 L IS Zoom lens and there is just no comparison, The Canon 100-400 just blows away the Tamron lens in all areas except for reach which is another 100mm on the Tamron. I compared my old tripod mounted test photos with the Canon 100-400 test photos using the same settings and the 100-400 is shaper has better contrast and most importantly has image stabilization which allows me to use a much slower shutter speed and still get great sharp photos. The auto focus on the Canon is also faster.

11-14-2008 Update:

It was a full moon the last two nights perfect for taking my best shot of the moon with my new Canon 100-400 F/4.5 - F/5.6 IS L lens. I wanted to compare the best moon shot I got with the Tamron 200-500mm with my new Canon lens. The moon was full and night clear and I took a hand held shot at 1/400s F/7.1 ISO 100 with the Canon 40D same camera I used with the Tamron test. I then downloaded and processed the Raw photo using the same settings I used for the best moon shot I ever got with the Tamron.

Results: The Canon 100-400 had enough resolving power and was sharp enough where I could actually zoom in enough on the moon shot taken with the Tamron 200-500mm at 500mm and it was slightly better. The shots at 400mm with the Tamron were a step down from the 400mm shot with the Canon 100-400.

The other thing I noticed after looking through the directory with all the daytime Tamron 200-500mm vs the Canon 100-400 was how many shots I got with the Canon 100-400 lens that would not be possible with the Tamron because the Tamron has no Image Stabilizer and the Tamron focused much more slowly. The Tamron is more of a tripod bird perched on a branch lens the Canon 100-400 I can actually do bird in flight photos!

Verdict:

If you are on a budget and don't mind shooting from a tripod at motionless or near motionless subjects the Tarmon 200-500 can do, but... if you have the money at all you need to get the Canon 100-400 you will be getting more shots and with more resolving power even though the Canon is 100mm shorter.

Lenses I currently own:

Canon EF-S 17-55 F/2.8 IS Ultra sharp, great colors, great low light, poor zoom action

Canon EF 135mm F/2.0 L The best portrait lens for males and tied with Canon 85mm F 1/.2 for sharpest lens I own, buttery smooth Bokeh

Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8 L fantastic colors, sharp for a zoom, very versatile ego boosting and attention getting and heavy! My favorite zoom lens!!!

Canon EF 100-400mm f4.5-5.6L great IS, super colors, sharp for a zoom, extremely versatile, variable Bokeh, even more ego boosting and attention getting when extended and 400mm reach!!

My next lens purchase I'm saving for right now: _Canon EF 300mm F/2.8 IS L the finest lens ever

I have several lenses but this is my favorite. The optics are supurb and while it may be a little slow at 500mm this is commong for most lenses cousting under $4000.

The lens has a cool feature that lets you mount a polarizer filter and attach a lens hood. You can then rotate the lens hood and filter as a complete assembly. It is almost impossible to rotate a polarizer filter in other telephoto lenses with the hood attached.

The tripod mount ring has a quick release option that is perfect if you want to hand hold the lens. The lens only weighs 2.8lbs and built very solid.
